Lopez Island

i have loved the idea of islands
ever since i was a small child devouring Arthur Ransome's stories
about the Swallows and Amazons who
sailed to Wildcat Island
and waged war against pirates

i think Lopez Island might be a grown-up version
of that childhood dream

and at the end of the working day
a small and secret cove beckons
where
i can imagine the two-masted red-sailed schooner
[that i once saw pass under the Golden Gate Bridge]
might anchor at sunset...

  11. Am trying to get my own blog post up about you being here - this one's lovely. May have to wait till I get over being stunned. Haven't read about those adventures on Wildcat Island, but I know for a fact that one of my own grown-up dreams just came true.

  13. Very lovely pictures from the workshop, India! Also really like your Madrona bark and cove pictures. Maybe if we had realized we both read and loved the Swallows and Amazons stories as kids, we would have made a better connection. I still have all the books, tattered from five kids reading and rereading them. Enjoy the next two days.

  16. These bundles do look good - if this amazing colour is cooked out of carrots - I'll never have them for dinner again - just for dyeing!
    Really? Carrots????
Best wishes from a very puzzled

  18. Beautiful looking place, I can FEEL stone and water singing.

I have quite a thing for islands, having spent much of my youth sailing around Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound and Cape Cod, and then living on Samos, Greece for a time. Small moutnain village on small island is something, too. I still think of myself as an ocean person - an ocean person now living in a forest. And I'll be a forest person living by the ocean if I go back there ever. And islands- there is something about them.

  19. Though I couldn't be there in person, I was in spirit...thinking of all of you together in that magical place making fairy-tale colors come to life on cloth. Perhaps another time...
